Eugene A. "Gene" Galica, 89, of Chicopee, Mass., died on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, with his family by his side.

He worked as a tool designer at the Springfield Armory, while attending night school at Western New England College. Gene was a registered professional engineer and worked at Defense Contract Administration Services in Hartford. After retiring from there he worked part time at Pratt & Whitney Tool and Machine in West Hartford and American Tool and Machine in Windsor. Gene was born on Oct. 14, 1924, in Chicopee and was the son of the late Antoni and Karolina (Kapinos) Galica. He was a communicant of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr and a graduate of Western New England College. Gene was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Chicopee Lodge of Elks 1849 and a member of the DCAS Bowling League. He also was a gate captain at Gate 9A at the Big E for over 30 years, including this past season - 2013.

Gene is predeceased by his wife, Alyce (Wajda) Galica, who died in 1990; and his siblings, Walter Galica, Mary Osenkowski, Adele Iwasinski, Mike Galica, and Jane Swiderski. He is survived by two sons, E. Paul Galica, and his wife, Kelly, of Broad Brook, and Mark A. Galica of Westfield; a daughter, Marlene A. Galica of Nelson, New Zealand; his brothers, Ziegfred Galica of West Springfield, and Anthony Galica of Chicopee; a sister, Irene Stadnicki of Chicopee; and many nieces and nephews.

Gene's funeral will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, from the Cierpial Memorial Funeral Home, 69 East St., Chicopee Falls, Mass., at 9 a.m. followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial in the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, 566 Front St., Chicopee, at 10 a.m. His burial with military honors will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Chicopee.
