John P. Reeves, 71, passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife holding his hand on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013.

He was born in Bryn Mawr, Pa., to the late Paul A. and Mary (Cook) Reeves and was a graduate of Cherry Hill High School in Cherry Hill, N.J. John continued his education receiving his Bachelor of Science from Juniata College in Huntington, Pa., and earned his PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. He distinguished himself as a leading researcher studying the function and regulation of the cell membrane sodium/calcium exchanger at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas, Texas, the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in Nutley, N.J., and the New Jersey Medical School in Newark, N.J. He joined the faculty of New Jersey Medical School as a professor in 1993 and remained there until his retirement. He published over 130 research articles and reviews, including several seminal papers, and collaborated with many of the leading scientists in his field. In 2006, he was inducted into Stuart Cook Master Educators' Guild in recognition of contributions to teaching and curriculum development, including a three-year term as the associate dean for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Newark, N.J. John was a valued and esteemed colleague because of his intellect, wit, and unflinching willingness to support other faculty, trainees, and students. In his retirement, he was the co-founder of the Piedmont Percolator coffeehouse, the secretary of the Democratic Town Committee, and was a member of the Springfield Photographic Society. In addition, he was an award-winning photographer, poet, and drummer. John loved jazz music and enjoyed tennis, and he was happiest when at his family's Adirondack lake house in Star Lake, N.Y.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Judy A. (Wilkinson) Reeves of Somers; and his loving children, Kathryn M. (Kary) Lewis, and her husband, Gregg, of Wilbraham, Mass., Anne B. Reeves of Montclair, N.J., James T.V. Reeves of Chicago, Ill.; and his cherished grandson, Aidan R. Lewis. He is also survived by his sisters, Anne L. Ortiz of Sante Fe, N.M., and Susan LaPlante of Cortland, N.Y.
John's funeral will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, in the Byron Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center, 1858 Allen St., Springfield, with visiting hours from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a Remembrance of Life Ceremony at 1 p.m.
