Joseph A. Miller, 83, a lifelong resident of Suffield, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013, after a fall on Thursday at his home.

Joseph was born to the late Howard F. and Helen (Albert) Miller on April 25, 1930. He attended Suffield High and Suffield Academy before entering the U.S. Air Force. Joseph was married to Geraldine Piaggi in 1955 and they had three children, Joseph Anthony, Gary, and Gena. His work life consisted of helping out on his grandfather's tobacco farm from early childhood through much of the first half of his life. He also worked at Kaman Aircraft, Hamilton Standard as an aircraft parts inspector, and spent many years at Continental Can Co. before retiring in 1995. Upon his retirement he went back to the farm and helped his son, Gary, for many years in the tobacco business and really seemed to enjoy this until 2009 when his orthopedic health would no longer allow him to get on and off the tractor. He enjoyed all sports and always enjoyed the thrill and excitement of going to the horse races with many friends and family over the years, until most had passed, but still managed to go to the teletrack on occasions as his physical health deteriorated. He was also an avid gardener, sometimes known as the "tomato warden" for his control of the tomato patch.

He leaves his son, Gary Miller, and his wife, Audrey, of Granville, Mass.; his daughter, Gena Mercier, and her husband, Brian, of Suffield; and three grandchildren, Gregery Miller of Amherst, Mass., Jessica Miller and Jason Miller, both of Granville, Mass. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, William Miller (1983); and his son, Joseph Anthony Miller (2000).

Family and friends may gather at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St. N., Suffield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 140 S. Main St., Suffield. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Suffield.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
