Richard G. Carpenter, 85, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford.

He was born Sept. 6, 1928, in Wilson to the late William L. and Viola (Forand) Carpenter. Richard served in the U.S. Army and spent 28 years in the Rockville and Vernon Fire Departments, starting out in the Fitton Hose Company in Rockville and lastly serving in the capacity of captain and safety officer. He was an active parishioner at St. Joseph's Church in Rockville. Richard was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed riding his bicycle.

He is survived by his son, Richard S. Carpenter, his wife, Diane; and his granddaughters Dana and Sarah Carpenter all of Vernon; his brothers William "Bill" of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Raymond of Rocky Hill; and his sister, Patricia "Pat" Lynch, of Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara (Sojka) Carpenter, in April of 2008; his brother, Henry; and his brother, Bernie.

Relatives and friends may join the family on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St., Rockville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Rockville. Burial will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Rockville.
