ISABELLE 'SUE' M. (MILLER) MIELKE, 97 HARLOWTON, MT - Isabelle "Sue" M. (Miller) Mielke 97 of Harlowton passed quietly to her home in Heaven Saturday, January 25th, 2014, in Wheatland Memorial Healthcare of natural causes. She was the eldest of four children born to farmers Louis and Ethel Miller of Chadwick, Illinois, and she graduated senior class Valedictorian from Chadwick High School in 1934; received her B.A. cum laude in French Literature from Milton College, Milton, WI, in 1938; and completed her M.A. in French from the U of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1939. Isabelle returned to Carroll Co., Illinois, to teach in the one-room elementary Washington School. In 1940, she married Edward Mielke at the Little Brown Church in the Vale near Nashua, IA. Daughter Nancy was born in 1944, followed by her sister Elsie in 1945. In 1951, Ed and "Sue" moved to Harlowton, MT, where Ed was employed with the Milwaukee Railroad Lines West. They quickly found themselves in love with Montana-camping, fishing, hunting, boating, and snowmobiling together. Isabelle maintained an active life as Girl Scout leader, school teacher, piano teacher, Wesleyan Church member, and community volunteer. After 40 years of railroading, in 1976, Ed and "Sue" retired, "And Then the Banjos." For the next 20 years they traveled around the United States to many banjo events, often as performing headliners well-known for their good music and good cheer. They are nationally recognized in the Four-string Banjo Wall of Honor exhibit at the American Banjo Museum in Oklahoma City. Their music filled their lives with wonderful friends, travels, and memories. In 2011, Isabelle moved into Wheatland Memorial Healthcare, an active resident bringing her quiet, gentle steadiness to all. Isabelle was predeceased by her husband,. Edward, brother, Edgar Miller, and sisters, Jeanette Miller and June (Arnold) Fink. She leaves behind daughters, Nancy Mielke of Carson City, NV, and Elsie Hepburn of Granville Ferry, NS, Canada; granddaughter, Stephani (Merle) Foraker of Buffalo, NY; grandsons, Andrew Achuff and Michael Achuff (Kelly Tradewell) of Victoria, BC, Canada; great-granddaughter, Violet Tradewell, of Victoria, BC.; and an extended family of loving relatives and friends. Isabelle's Montana memorial service will be held May 10th at 11 a.m. at the Wesleyan Church in Harlowton, MT, and her Illinois service will be held May 29th at 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Mt. Carroll, IL, with receptions following at the churches. Isabelle's cremains will be privately interred beside her husband's in her family's plot in Chadwick.
