Dr. Ernest Lewis MacVicar, Jr. Franksville – Dr. Ernest Lewis MacVicar, Jr., 93, passed away peacefully at Wheaton Franciscan All Saints on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 surrounded by his wife and all of his children. Dr. MacVicar was born in Racine on June 21, 1919 to Ernest and Julia (nee, Nerad) Mrkvicka. He attended Horlick High School in Racine. Following high school Ernie earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He was a member of the golf team in college and was an avid golfer until the age of 88. He was a member of Chi Psi fraternity. Dr. MacVicar served in the U.S. Army as a physician during WWII where he held the rank of Captain and was stationed on Adak in the Aleutian Islands. Following his service in the Army, Dr. MacVicar attended the Medical College of Virginia where he earned his specialty in Ophthalmology. He married the former Dorothy Benstead on October 6, 1951. He practiced ophthalmology in Racine until his retirement in 1995. He served as Chief of Staff at St. Luke’s Hospital and was President of the Racine County Medical Society. Survivors include his beloved wife, Dorothy “Dodie” MacVicar; children, Jessica (Bill) Golden, Pamela MacVicar Johnson, Ernest Lewis “Butch” (Janice) MacVicar III , and Monica (John) Cloak; grandchildren, Jordan Golden, Morgan Golden, Jessie Golden, Gavin Golden, Odinn Johnson, Skye Johnson, Charlie MacVicar, Eddie MacVicar, Audrey MacVicar, Jack Cloak, Chelsea Cloak, Michael Cloak and Sadee Cloak; great-granddaughter, Ottavia Barrett Lanzon; and niece, Julie Jorgenson. Dr. MacVicar is also survived by many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Elizabeth Jorgenson. Visitation for Dr. MacVicar will be held from 1:00 until 2:30 at Purath-Strand funeral home located at 3915 Douglas Avenue in Racine on Sunday, February 17, 2013. A short memorial service with Reverend James Kaestner officiating will follow at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Healthcare Network 904 State Street, Racine, WI 53404 or to Evans Scholars at or One Briar Road, Golf, Illinois 60029.
