PALM COAST, FL - John H. Ernst, 69, passed away on Saturday June 29, 2013, following a debilitating lung disease. John was born in Racine where he lived until moving to Palm Coast 10 years ago. Before retiring, John was the Assistant Chief for the Racine Police Department, later he was the head of security for University of Wisconsin, Parkside. John was a member of Santa Maria Del Mar Catholic Church and a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Elks Club, Marine Corps League, Kiwanis Club and the Deutscher Manner Verein. John was a substitute teacher in both Florida and Wisconsin, especially enjoying his time working with students with special needs. He also volunteered with the Special Olympics. He was a longtime member of the Racine Kilties and an avid Green Bay Packers fan. John enjoyed hunting, golf, fishing, bicycling and traveling. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Parkside with a Bachelor’s Degree, received his Master’s at Western Illinois University, and was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. John also served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Judi, daughters Kirsten Ernst of Philadelphia, PA and Kara Ernst of Racine, WI, brother Karl (Mary) Ernst of Racine, WI and sister Karen (Lonnie) Olson of Kansasville, WI. John was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Peter Ernst. A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held in the Racine Theatre Guild, 2519 Northwestern Ave., on Sunday, December 22nd, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev Jeffrey Barrows officiating.
