TWO RIVERS - Ross G. “Kelly” Kjelstrup, age 93, a resident of the Hamilton Care Center, Two Rivers, WI, formerly of Cherokee Village, AR, Racine, WI and Plentywood, MT, died late Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the Hamilton Care Center. Ross was born July 16, 1919 in Plentywood, MT to the late Jack and Ida J. (Gusey) Kjelstrup. He was a graduate of Plentywood High School with the class of 1938. He was a star athlete, earning nine high school letters in football, basketball and track, and set many school records and also captained his teams. In 1940, Ross joined the U.S. Marine Corps., and later saw action in the Marshall Islands and on Guam. He was discharged from service on Jan. 16, 1947, as Master Sgt. Ross married the former Edna D. Sorensen after the war, learned a trade, and raised his family in Racine, WI. The couple celebrated 66 years of marriage, before Edna preceded Ross in death on May 6, 2012. Summer weekends were often spent at the cottage on Wind Lake or camping at area archery ranges. Family vacations were road trips to Montana. After retirement, he and Edna traveled extensively throughout the rest of North America. In 1980, they moved to Arkansas, where the weather and the golfing were good… and at age 65, still game, he bought his first motorcycle. Kelly was retired from the Dumore Corp. of Racine where he worked as a tool & die maker & shop foreman. Survivors include one son & daughter-in-law, Rod and Cheryl Kjelstrup of Mishicot, WI, one daughter & son-in-law, Mary V. and William McCanna of Corsica, PA; six grandchildren, John R. Serpe, Kenosha, WI, Christopher M. Kjelstrup, Yuba City, CA, Andrew J. Kjelstrup, Madison, WI, William G. (Cherlyn) Wildenberg, Santa Barbara, CA, W. Douglas (Tara) McCanna, Thornville, OH, Brian R. (Sherrie) McCanna, Eagle, WI; three great grandchildren; and numerous nieces & nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Kjelstrup; sisters: Barbara (Calvin) Hyppa, Katherine (Orville) Grimsrud, Doris Allen; father-in-law & mother-in-law, Soren & Karen Sorensen; brother-in-law, Orville (Evelyn) Sorensen; and sister-in-law, Elsie V. Sorensen. Private family services will be held at a later date, with burial of his cremains in Graceland Cemetery, Racine, WI. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc. or the donor’s choice. Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels, 1506 -18th St. Two Rivers, WI is assisting the Kjelstrup family with funeral arrangements.
