KENDALLVILLE — Paul Walter Hoerner, age 94, of Kendallville, died on Friday, March 7, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Hoerner was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on January 23, 1920, to the late Otto Walter Hoerner and Hilda (Tonges) Hoerner.
He graduated from Central High School in Fort Wayne in 1937 and entered the United States Army where he served his country from 1943-45 during WWII. On October 25, 1952, he married Almeda Iona Blake.
Paul was the plant superintendent for Sheller-Globe in Grabill, Indiana, for 14 years before retiring in 1985. After he retired, he stayed on as a consultant for Sheller-Globe for three years.
He was proud to serve the people of Kendallville as captain of the Kendallville Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years. He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church and life member of American Legion Post 86 in Kendallville.
Paul and Almeda loved to travel across the country and go gambling. They especially enjoyed their many trips to Makinaw Island; Gatlinburg, Tennessee; and Branson, Missouri.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Almeda Hoerner of Kendallville; a daughter, Drenda (Jim) Kurtz of Fort Wayne; a
son, William Cox of Seguin, Texas; five grandchildren, Tim Cox of Jacksonville, Florida; Kris (Starr) Cox of Cromwell; Paula (Robert) Kennedy of Fort Wayne; Todd Kurtz of Fort Wayne and Josh Cox of Fort Wayne; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Elmer Hoerner, who was killed in WWII, and Ervin Hoerner.
Visitation and funeral services with military honors will be Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Hite Funeral Home, 403 S. Main St., Kendallville. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the funeral service starting at 1 p.m. Pastor Robert Shriner will officiate the funeral and military honors will be conducted by members of the Kendallville VFW Post 2749, Rome City American Legion Post 381 and active duty United States Army troops.
Preferred memorials may be made to Kendallville Fire Department or to Heartland Hospice.
