Mr. Albert C. "Ace" Bean, Jr. of South Kansas City, 91, died at home January 23, 2013. Cremation. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 92nd and Wornall Rd. A reception will be between 4 and 6 p.m. at Mission Hills Country Club, 5400 Mission Drive, Mission Hills, Kan. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Saint Luke's Hospital Foundation, 4225 Baltimore, Kansas City, MO 64111, All Saints Episcopal Church, or a . Ace Bean was born in Kansas City on July 12, 1921, and was a lifelong resident. He attended Bryant Grade School, Southwest High School, and graduated from Cornell University with a B.A. degree in government. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He joined the Navy in January 1943 and served as communication officer on a destroyer operating in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. He resigned his commission as Lieutenant (J.G.) in January 1946. His entire working career was with the Tnemec Company, Inc., a paint manufacturing company founded by his father, Albert C. Bean, in 1921. He began with summertime work during his university years and resumed on a full-time basis when he returned from Navy duty in January 1946. He became president in 1956 and in 1989 chairman of the board, and remained active in that position until his death. Tnemec Company manufactures high- performance coatings used for new construction and maintenance in manufacturing & processing markets and major architectural projects. The company operates manufacturing facilities in North Kansas City and Baltimore, MD and distribution centers throughout the U.S. Ace was a past member of the National Paint & Coatings Association Board of Directors and was a recipient of the Industry Statesman award in 1998. In 1944, Ace married Molly Phelps of Kansas City, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard K. Phelps. They had recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. He was a member and former vestryman of All Saints Episcopal Church. Ace was actively engaged with Saint Luke's Hospital, serving on the Hospital Board of Directors from 1973 to 1993 and the Saint Luke's Hospital Foundation from 1993 to 2003. He received the Foundation Fellow Award in 2000. Ace maintained a keen interest in Cornell University and was active in university affairs locally and at the university in Ithaca, NY. He was a charter member of the Cayuga Society and a lifetime member of the Cornell Council. Following the death of their son, David R. Bean, in 1971, shortly after his graduation from Cornell, Ace and Molly established endowed programs in his name for students to study in Europe and a faculty fellowship in the College of Arts & Sciences. In 1995 they received the Ezra Cornell Award. Ace was a former 25-year member of the Rotary Club 13 in Kansas City and the Mercury Club, and a current member of Vanguard Club, the River Club, The Blash Investment Club, and the Mission Hills Country Club where he enjoyed playing both golf and tennis for many years. He was a member of the former Holiday Island Yacht Club in Arkansas. Ace was preceded in death by his son, David R. Bean, and by his two sisters, Betty Cortelyou and Helen Mohrmann. He leaves his wife, Molly; his son, Albert C. Bean III and wife Elizabeth of Ormond Beach, Fla.; his daughter, Melanie Bean of NYC; his daughter, Kimbrough Higgins and husband Dr. Ted Higgins of Mission Hills; grandchildren, Chase Bean, Rachel Owen, David R. Bean II, Eddie Higgins, Maggie Higgins, Becca Higgins, Helen Higgins, Dylan C. Bean, and four great-grandchildren. Arrangements: D.W.
