1919 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Archie Webb Smith III, 93, Leawood, Ks., passed on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at his home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, October 28 at Leawood United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Chapel Memorial Gardens, 94th & State Ave., KCK. Visitation will be Sunday, 3 to 5 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Alphapointe Foundation (Alphapointe.org), 7501 Prospect, KCMO 64132 or to the Capital Building Campaign, Leawood United Methodist Church, 2915 W. 95th St., Leawood, KS 66206. Mr. Smith was born November 9, 1919 in Kansas City, Kansas to Archie and Marguerite (Polster) Smith. His family was active with Central Christian Church in KCK. He was a graduate of Wyandotte H.S. and served with the Navy, in the Pacific, during WWII. Following the war, Mr. Smith returned to Universal Construction Co. (UCC), which was founded in 1931 by his grandfather, Archie W. Smith, Sr. and uncle, Norvel Smith, with roots reaching back to 1887 in the construction industry. Archie began his construction career at age 14, when he carried buckets of water for the construction workers. Archie rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the present-day CEO of UCC. Most of his life was spent in the Kansas City area, except for a decade when Archie and his young family lived in Joplin, returning to KC in 1958. Through the years, Archie was a strong supporter of many organizations in Kansas City. He served on the board of Alphapointe, for more than 40 years, as president 1996- 1998, and was honored to be named its first Director Emeritus. His memberships also included the American Royal Governors, Leawood United Methodist Church, Rotary Club of Shawnee Mission, Wise Owl Club, American Legion Post 370 and VFW. He served as the Kansas City Chapter Association of General Contractor (AGC) President 1973-74, and Chairman of The Builders' Board in 1983. He was also a member of various other clubs including Leawood County Club, Blue Hills Country Club, Saddle & Sirloin Club, Kansas City Club, Kaw Valley Investors and the Monkey Club. Archie was preceded in death, by his wife of 63 years, Dolores, in March 2003. He leaves two sons, and their wives, Archie Smith IV and Sue, KCK, Norvel and Linda Smith, Smyrna, TN, two daughters and their husbands, Dee and Randy Turner, McLouth, KS and Cynthia and Steve Smith, Stilwell.
