Bernard Henry "Barney" BIGLER Obituary
BIGLER Bernard "Barney" Henry Bigler, 90, of Olathe, Kan., died September 27, 2013, at St. Luke's South Hospital, Overland Park. Barney was born Feb. 19, 1923, in Stoddard County, Mo. He was the seventh of eight children of Joseph Frank Bigler and Helen Schumacher Bigler, natives of southern Illinois. Barney grew up in Ross County, Ohio, and attended rural schools in that area. Barney served in the U.S. Navy for 3 1/2 years in World War II and was honorably discharged in October 1945. Barney graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.A. degree in journalism in June 1949. He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi fraternity and worked as a reporter and editor for daily newspapers in Zanesville and Columbus, Ohio. He subsequently worked as an account executive and copywriter for advertising agencies in Ohio and Wisconsin before moving to the Kansas City area in 1962. Once in Kansas City, Barney was a copywriter, account supervisor and film/video producer/director and vice president at the Potts-Woodbury and Biddle advertising agencies and their successors for 26 years, working on a wide range of consumer, industrial and agricultural accounts. He was then principle of his own advertising agency for a decade before retiring. Barney was a member of several advertising/marketing organizations, did biographical writing for the Agricultural Hall of Fame and volunteer work with the FFA. He was a member of the MO-KAN Squadron of the Association of Naval Aviation, the American Legion Post 370, and the Knights of Columbus-St. Ann's Council. In 1952, Barney married Lola Mary Schell, a native of Noble County, Ohio, and they lived the majority of their lives in Prairie Village, Kan., where they were members of St. Ann's Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Lola, and daughters, Anne Leslie (Tiberio) Lindgren and their children Alex, Adrienne, Karl, of Irvine, Calif., and Lisa Mary (Mark) Kohlrus and their children Zachary, Chris, Maggie, Debbie, of Lenexa, Kan. Barney was preceded in death by his son, Mark Joseph Bigler. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 :30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Lenexa, with Monsignor Raymond Burger presiding. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa. A visitation and the family will greet friends, beginning at 9:30 a.m. until service time, at the church.
