C. Gerald "Jerry" James

Obituary Condolences

1931 – 2013 C. Gerald "Jerry" James passed away on August 6, 2013 from complications of melanoma cancer while visiting family in Santa Barbara, California. He was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of the late Jean and Charlie James. Jerry graduated from Southwest High School and continued on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree from the School of Business at the University of Missouri, Columbia. After graduation, he served in the United States Air Force as a First Lieutenant, stationed in Japan and Korea. Later, he also obtained a degree from The Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Jerry and his family moved from Kansas City to Liberty, Missouri in 1961 where his father Charlie and he had purchased the controlling interest of the then First National Bank of Liberty. He was an executive at that bank until he was elected President and CEO of Boatmen's North Hills Bank. That bank later became part of the Bank of America system and he retired as an Executive Vice President of Bank of America, Kansas City. Jerry, known to many for his community involvements, was a member of the Northland Betterment Committee, Rotary Club and Clay County Economic Development Council. He was also an Elder of the Liberty Christian Church and served on the board of the Liberty Hospital Foundation. Jerry and his wife, Janie, of 56 years first visited Summit County, Colorado in the 1970's, becoming full time residents in Keystone, Colorado 20 years ago. Jerry found a spiritual connection to the mountains which would last his entire life. Again, always feeling the importance of giving back to his community, Jerry soon became involved in a variety of community services. He and Janie were members of the first volunteer class at Summit Medical Center where he focused on serving the hospital. He was a founding member of the Flight For Life Capital Cabinet, established in 2004 to raise funds to build the first Flight For Life hangar. The group was successful raising $1.2 million for the helicopter hangar construction which was completed and dedicated in 2007. Jerry led the effort to establish the Summit Medical Center Health Foundation in March 2007, serving as its first Chair. He also served on the hospital Community Board and the Chair of the CHI Colorado Foundation State Board. He found great joy in his volunteer work. . . meeting, greeting and developing friendships with his hospital family. His other joys included golfing, traveling, playing poker "with the boys", couples bridge with dear friends, fine wine and a good martini. But most of all, he loved doing for others. His wife, children and grandchildren were the most constant beneficiaries of his generous heart. However, he shared it as well with all he met. He leaves us all with a model of living in the interest of others rather than ourselves. Jerry is survived by his beloved wife Janie; children Joe (Sally) James, Jay (Shelley) James; Jill (John) James Skjervem; grandchildren Sarah, Katy and Anna James, Charlie and Jack Skjervem. His wish was to be remembered in life, in one's own personal way. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Liberty Christian Church, 427 East Kansas, Liberty, Missouri 64068 or Liberty Hospital Foundation's Tree House, 2525 West Hendren Drive, Liberty, Missouri 64068. Celebration of Life service will take place on Friday, September 13th with visitation at 12:30 p.m. and the service at 2:00 p.m. at the Liberty Christian Church, 427 East Kansas, Liberty, Missouri. Private burial.
