Dr. George Kenneth Landis, 88, passed away December 24, 2012, at Foxwood Springs after a long illness. He was born in Kansas City, MO, on Feb. 21, 1924, to George and Laura Landis. He graduated from Central High School in 1940 and received his undergraduate degree from North Central College in Naperville, IL. He married the love of his life, Corky, on May 10, 1944. He went on to earn his medical degree at the University of Louisville in 1946 after serving as a midshipman in the Navy V-12 program during World War II. Following medical training at Kansas City General Hospital, he became the Medical Director of the Kansas City Municipal Tuberculosis Hospital and began his private practice. After his service with the Navy during the Korean War, he returned to his private practice and studied at New York University Post Graduate Medical School. After retiring from his private practice, George served as Medical Director at Foxwood Springs Living Center in Raymore, MO. He was an honorary member of the medical staffs of St. Luke's Hospital, Research Medical Center and Research Belton Hospital. In addition, he was a member of the American Medical Association, Missouri State Medical Association, Metropolitan Medical Society, the American College of Chest Physician and the International Society of Travel Medicine. Besides his love of medicine, George had a passion for his family, hunting, bowling, racquetball and gardening. He combined his loves for traveling and photography as he and Corky explored the many corners of the world, always returning with spectacular pictures. He served on the boards of the United Methodist Seminary of Naperville, IL, Pembroke Country Day School, YMCA of the Rockies and the Kansas City Color Slide Club. He was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club and the Sunflower Umpire Association, and was an active participant and president of the Johnson County 3&2 Baseball Program. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Ed, Ruby, Pearl, Carl, Orlando and Opal May. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Corky, his children, Dr. Ken Landis (Jane) of Los Angeles, CA, Sheryl North (Benny Morentin) of Tucson, AZ, Gary Landis of Minneapolis, MN, and Mindy Davis (Barry) of Prairie Village, KS; nine grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He will leave a void in all of our lives. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at Foxwood Springs Living Center, 1500 W. Foxwood Dr., Raymore, MO 64083. A private burial at Memorial Park Cemetery will follow.
