Hans was born in Kassel, Germany in 1933. He came to the U.S. as a young man and met the love of his life, Marilynn, at UC Davis where he took his B.A. After a three-year interruption of his academic career, serving with the U.S. Army as a surgical technician, he resumed his studies at Northwestern University, where he earned a M.A. and Ph.D. In 1963, Hans and Marilynn moved to Kansas City where he began a 36 year career teaching philosophy and medical ethics at UMKC. He was a pioneer in medical education and bioethics, and one of the first philosophers in the U.S. to hold a faculty position in a medical school. Together with an attorney and a physician, he founded the Midwest Bioethics Center in 1984, which remains a leading consulting resource in matters of biomedical ethics throughout the country. He profoundly influenced the lives of thousands of his philosophy and medical students and the patients they served. Hans was preceded in death by his wife Marilynn. Survivors include his sons Glenn Uffelmann and Darryl Uffelmann, their families including four beautiful grandchildren he loved immensely, and many friends.
