JEANNE MARIE TOMPKINS Obituary
Jeanne Marie Tompkins, 87, of Prairie Village, KS ,passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Jeanne was born in Streator, Illinois September 10, 1926. Jeanne grew up in Streator and graduated from the Streator High School and then went on to the University of Illinois where she graduated in Journalism. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. Afterwards she moved to Chicago and worked as a legal secretary for Parker and Carter patent attorneys. In Chicago, she met her husband Ben Tompkins and they were married January 25, 1953 and moved to Kansas City and established a home lasting 60 years. She was a volunteer at Research Medical Center and an active member of the Village Presbyterian Church. She also was very involved with her neighborhood community and sons' activities at Somerset Elementary School. She was also an avid golfer and tennis player. Her last year she shared frequently her love and kindness within the Santa Marta community. Jeanne's husband and family are especially appreciative of the dedicated and loving care over the past year through her friends at the Santa Marta Retirement Center. Jeanne so much loved her friends and family. Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Marie Scharfenberg. Survivors include her loving husband Ben J. Tompkins Jr.; her sons and daughters-in-law John and Connie Tompkins, Jim and Jodi Tompkins; her grandchildren Annie Tompkins, Beth Kearney, Johnny Tompkins, Julie Tompkins, Ryan Tompkins, and Matthew Tompkins. Visitation is at 12:00 PM on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd, Prairie Village, KS, 66208. A funeral service follows at 1:00PM also at the church. Internment will be at Johnson County Memorial Gardens at 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS.
