JOHN ROYAL HAMMOND Obituary
John Royal Hammond, 82, of Leawood, KS, passed away May 13, 2014. Visitation will be on Sat., May 17 from 2-3:00pm followed by a memorial service at 3:00pm, Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS. Interment services at Johnson County Memorial Gardens will be at a later date. John will be remembered for his love of his family, especially playful sense of humor and love of youth sports and music. He graduated from Huntington School for Boys in Boston, MA. He then attended Colby College in Waterville, ME, in pursuit of a degree in Psychology, before enlisting in the Navy where he served 3 years on the U.S.S. Willis A. Lee. He later served 5 years in the Naval Reserves as a Petty Officer 2nd Class. Upon leaving the Navy he joined Connecticut General Life Ins. Co. working in the Pension Dept. in Harford NY., Buffalo, NY, and later establishing the western Home Office for CG in Kansas City, in 1959. In early 1965 John left CG to found his own insurance agency, Hammond & Assoc. as well as Pension Admin. Services where he quickly became a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He was also a life time member of the Kansas and Missouri Life Underwriters Association. He then founded Hammond Financial Services an ongoing financial planning, insurance and investment brokerage services agency in Overland Park, KS, where he worked closely with both the Kansas and Missouri Funeral Directors Assoc. for 30+ years. He will be remembered for his love of youth baseball giving nearly 30 years of service to the Johnson County 3 & 2 Baseball Club where he served on the Executive Committee and served as Past President for over 20 years. He also sponsored and coached over two dozen baseball teams during his tenure with 3 & 2 Baseball. John was pre-deceased by his parents, John W. S. and Grace P. Hammond, and his sister Barbara Sither. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life for 58 years, Paula McLean Hammond; his children Ken Hammond, Leawood, KS, Will Hammond, Overland Park, KS (wife Kim), Russ Hammond, Lexington, MO (wife Lynn), and Doug Hammond, Leawood, KS; eight grandchildren as well as 4 great-grand children. The family suggests contributions to the Crossroads Hospice or Christ Anglican Church.
