Robert B. Powell, Jr., 90, passed away March 20, 2014, following an illness. Born and raised in Independence, Mo., where he owned and operated Inter-City Welding. He sold the business in 1985 then retired with his wife Juanita, to Donna, Texas. A Navy veteran of World War II, he completed the last of his service on the ship the Wm. P. Biddle mainly deployed in the Pacific theatre. Bob had many interests in his life. From traveling in the RV with the Holiday Ramblers to photography, fishing, hunting and his one great love was flying his private airplane. After his service to our country, Bob returned to Independence where he and Juanita attended and volunteered at Maywood Baptist Church. Bob was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Rotary Club in Independence. After retiring to Donna, Texas, Bob continued his volunteer work as a board member of the Cactus Club at Victoria Palms Resort. They raised and are survived by two daughters, Connie App (Dan) of Morrow, Ohio, and Carol Neill (Jerry) of Lake Quivira, Kan. Bob's military service to our country and honoring all military was a strong priority in his life. He always enjoyed a road trip to The National Museum of the Pacific War located in Fredricksburg, Texas, where his ship is honored with a memorial plaque for its service during the war. Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Juanita, and his parents and sister. Burial of his ashes will be a private gathering of his immediate family this summer in Independence. Those wishing to make a donation in his honor should consider either the Admiral Nimitz Foundation, The National Museum of the Pacific, 328 E. Main St., Fredricksburg, TX 78624 or Powell Gardens, 1609 NW U.S. Hwy. 50, Kingsville, MO 64061. There is a hole in our hearts where he will be missed, but the thought that he is in heaven with no more pain or sorrow brings us great comfort.
