ROBERT E. FRANCIS Obituary
Robert E. Francis, 92, longtime resident of Palm Beach, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 7, 2014. Robert was born in Chippewa Falls, WI on March 18, 1921. At age one, he moved with his parents, Hugh and Sarah Greenfield Francis to Kansas City, Missouri. Robert is a graduate of Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City and the University of Missouri in Columbia where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He has served as Director of Public Relations at Ripon College in Wisconsin, and as Chief Advancement Officer at Millikin University, Decatur, Illinois. In addition, Mr. Francis was affiliated with the Council for Financial Aid to Education and he was Executive Director of the Associated Colleges of Indiana. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Robert was President and co-owner with his wife, Patricia, of Trappers Turn Golf Club and properties in Wisconsin Dells from 2001 until 2006. The former Owner- Publisher of the Commercial Record, a legal and financial newspaper in Palm Beach County, Mr. Francis was also the Owner-Publisher of Green Lake County Newspapers in Wisconsin, the Nisswa-Pequot Lakes Newspaper in Minnesota and the Lakeville Journal in Connecticut. He was a member of the Board of Trustees for St. Andrews School in Boca Raton, Florida; President of the Pembroke Country Day School Alumni Association; member of the Executive Board of the Independent College Funds of America and a member of the Board of the American Court and Commercial Newspapers. He received an honorary doctorate degree from Ripon College in Wisconsin. Robert was a member of the Episcopal Church of Bethesda by the Sea; The Society of the Four Arts; The Beach Club; The Everglades Club; The Sailfish Club and the Old Guard Society of Palm Beach Golfers. In Wisconsin he was a member of the Milwaukee Country Club and the Green Lake Yacht Club. Robert was a resident of Palm Beach for over thirty five years and spent summers in Green Lake, Wisconsin. He was devoted to his family, was passionate about education, loved discussing economic policy and was a devoted fan of the Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers. Robert was predeceased by his wife, the former Patricia Parker of Janesville, Wisconsin, in January of 2013. He is survived by three sons; Mark Francis of Guffy, Colorado Kent (Kathy) Francis of Dunlap, Illinois and Tod (Bonnie) Francis of Menlo Park, California, four grandchildren; Johnathon Francis of Chicago, Ilinois, Christopher Francis of Hanna City, Illinois, and Taylor and Brian Francis of Menlo Park, California and his brother, Hugh Greenfield Francis of Lake Wissota near Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Bethesda by the Sea Episcopal Church, 141 S County Rd, Palm Beach, FL 33480. The family will host a reception immediately following the service at The Everglades Club, 356 Worth Avenue, Palm Beach, FL 33480.
