WILLIAM E. BLOCK Obituary

William E. Block, 84, of Leawood, Kan., passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Grace Gardens Assisted Living in Leawood. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Nativity Church in Leawood. Mr. Block was born Aug. 2, 1929, in Seneca, Kan. He was a Marine Corps veteran and served in Korea with the First Engineer Battalion. In 1956, he earned a bachelor's degree in architecture from Kansas State University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. He practiced architecture in Atchison, Kan., for 15 years before serving as city architect for the city of Des Moines, Iowa. Survivors include his wife, Shirley (Winterscheidt) Block of Leawood, Kan.; daughters Jayne Brungardt of Kansas City, Mo., Joyce Wall of Overland Park, Kan., Jill Canon of Kansas City, Mo., and Jana Tiano of Frisco, Texas; son Jay Block of Grimes, Iowa; and a sister, Grace Strathman of Seneca, Kan. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and was great-grandfather to six children. Bill Block will be remembered as a man who dearly loved his wife, family, grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
