George G. Gekas, 84, of Lake Villa, Ill., passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at Advocate Condell Medical Center, Libertyville, Ill.

He was born May 27, 1928, in Chicago, the son of Gus G. and Panigiotta (Nicholopoulos) Gekas. He was preceded in death by his parents and dear brothers, John G. and Ernest G. Gekas. George leaves behind his loving wife Yvonne, many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

George was a prominent entrepreneur and businessman beginning as a shoe shine boy, wipe em off for a nickel, shine em for a dime. At eight years old, he owned his own newspaper stand; his first grocery store at 17. George was most proud of his service to his country during the Korean War where he served in the U.S. Army. George became a buyer for meat and dairy for the U.S. Government overseas during his military career. Georges successful career includes the meat packing business as founder of Empire Packing grocery business, and a founding member/brother of Gekas Brothers Supermarket. George was quite involved in residential and commercial industrial developments all over the country. He also owned nationwide self-storage facilities, office warehouses, and warehouse facilities, as well as apartment complexes. Georges success was not only business and finance, but charitable as well. He was proud to be a mentor to the Boys Club, benefactor of the Trevor Grade School, Trevor, Wis., and contributor to many other charities aiding the disadvantaged. He was a proud Mason of Washburn Lodge #145 of Bristol, Wis. George touched the lives of all he came into contact with; his favorites saying lose a dollar, make a friend. I got a lot of friends. Farewell Uncle George, you are deeply treasured but extremely missed by your countless family and friends.
