KINSTON - Lawrence Leonard Boone, 74, of Kinston, peacefully passed away Monday, September 2, 2013. Lawrence was born June 18, 1939 in Lenoir County to the late Dempsey and Elsie Fields Boone. Lawrence retired from the North Carolina DOT as a Traffic Technician with thirty years of service. He has been a faithful member of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church for over forty five years. Lawrence may have appeared tough on the exterior but inside he was a loving, kind-hearted, caring man with a special fondness for young people and children. Lawrence thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities he had to work and serve at the church and school. Lawrence served his community as a volunteer fireman with the North Lenoir Volunteer Fire Department for over forty years. He was a jack of all trades and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Lawrence made many new friends at the Tanglewood Church Cancer Support Group and he grew to love and treasure the support he and Alice Faye received from the group. He enjoyed great times of fellowship with the Hardee's Breakfast Club and Tuesday Night Supper Club. A service to honor and celebrate Lawrence's life will be held Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 7 p.m. from Bethel Free Will Baptist Church. Interment will be Thursday at 11 a.m. from Pinelawn Memorial Park. Lawrence is survived by his wife of fifty years, Alice Faye Stroud Boone; daughter, Marla; two grandchildren, Zachary Lawrence and Abbie Elisebeth; brother, Mearl Boone; sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Lloyd Cummings, Vicki and Donald Heath, Ned and Linda Stroud; a host of nieces and nephews along with many other family members and friends. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by a sister, Ina Mae Humphrey; and two brothers, Alvis and James Boone. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening following the service and at other times they will be at the home.
