KINSTON - Roger Dean Evans, 86, of 1001 Fairfield Ave., passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the N.C. State Veterans Home on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013. Mr. Evans was born on Jan. 20, 1927, and was a life-long resident of Lenoir County. He was the son of the late Jesse Hallock Evans and Sadie Cummings Evans. He attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh and served in the United States Army in Italy during World War II. Mr. Evans was a charter member of Northwest Christian Church where he served as an Elder and Chairman of the Board for several terms. During his business career he was President and Owner of Evans Construction Company, Evans Real Estate, Brentwood Subdivision, Evans Storage Warehouses and E Z Mart Convenience Stores. He participated in many community organizations including the Kinston Chamber of Commerce, Pride of Kinston and Lenoir Committee of 100. Mr. Evans was an enthusiastic participant of outdoor activities. He passed on his love for the North Carolina coast, boating, fishing and hunting to his sons and grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. at Northwest Christian Church, 2009 Carey Road, with Pastor Amos Sykes officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery. Survivors include two sons, Roger D. "Rod" Evans Jr. and wife Jan Waller Evans of Kinston, William Hallock "Hal" Evans and wife Susan Holland Evans of Kinston; six grandchildren, Virginia Evans Jones and husband, Chris, of Newport, Melinda Evans Hart of Chapel Hill, Deborah L. Connolly and husband, Bill, of Kinston, Roger Bryan Evans and wife, Stacey, of Raleigh, Mary Kathryn Finch and husband, Justin, of Bailey, and Tracey P. Woodard and husband, Jim, of Hampstead; and 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy E. Malinovsky of Sandusky, Ohio; a brother, Fredrick T. Evans and wife, Ora Mae, of Kinston; a sister, Ruth Ann Malpass and husband, Wendell, of Pittsboro, and a special friend Nancy Cherry. Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Carraway Evans, and sisters, Mildred Evans Worthington and Pauline Evans Mansour. The family will receive friends from 6- 8:00 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, at Howard-Carter Funeral Home.
