KINSTON - Wiley Edward "Tommy" Hill of Kinston was born in Lenoir County on February 11, 1927, to Grover Cleveland Hill and Sallie Ann Summerlin. He passed away on March 16, 2014, at age 87 after a brief period of declining health. Tommy attended school at Contentnea, but left before graduation to serve in the U.S. Navy during the final months of WWII. His excellent mechanical ability, inventiveness, and enjoyment working with his hands eventually led to his employment in Kinston by Lynwood Turner at Turner's Tractor & Implement Co., where he worked as a mechanic on Allis-Chalmers tractors for 37 years until his retirement. His ready wit and love of people endeared him to many. In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by two brothers, William Stanley Hill and Grover Clay Hill; three sisters, Effie Lee Hill Becton, Faye Hill French Mozingo, and Joyce Hill Owens Dula. His brother, James Wesley Hill, and sister, Mary Rebecca Hill, survive him. Tommy and his first wife Dorothy Mae Owens were the parents of three children, all of whom survive him: Brenda Hill West, Gail Yvonne Hill and Charles Edward Hill. His son-in-law Furney West is deceased. Also surviving Tommy are his step-daughters, Patricia (Jimmy) Davis, Carolyn (J.D.) Hines, and Sandra (Steve) Slavinski; and step-daughter-in-law, Donna Bell. Tommy's wife of 42 years, Retha Jones Bell Hill, who passed away in 2012, was their mother. Step-son J.W. Bell is deceased. Other survivors are Tommy's grandchildren: Lisa West McCoy, Danny (Amy) West, Charles (Renee) West, Christopher West, Audrey Whaley (John) Abernathy, Stephen (Kelly) Whaley, and Brandon Hill; his step-grandchildren, James (Tana) Herring, Kevin (Laura) Bell and Angel (J.J.) Jones; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Howard-Carter Funeral Home with the Reverend Daniel Edward West officiating. Visitation will follow the services and other times at the home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 21, 2014, at Pinelawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Tommy's memory may be made to The , 3015 S.
