LOOMIS, ALFRED CONNOR - age 96, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Wood Village in Sweetwater. The youngest of ten children, he was born near Tellico Plains, Tennessee, on May 30, 1917, to Sheldon Palmer and Elizabeth Connor Loomis. He was a graduate of Tennessee Military Institute and Cumberland University before receiving a master's degree from Vanderbilt University. He married Claire Jackson Loomis on December 25th, 1941, in Lebanon, Tennessee. During World War II he served as a 1st lieutenant in the US Army. He began his career teaching at Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee, before returning to Sweetwater in 1956 to join his brothers in business at Loomis Packing Company. He was a long time member, deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member at First Baptist Church in Sweetwater. After retiring in 1979, he devoted his time to his family, church responsibilities, many beloved pets, and the cultivation of a large vegetable garden from which he shared generously with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Claire; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. James C. Loomis and Patricia, Jerry L. Loomis and Alison; daughter and son-in-law, Betsy Loomis Rotters and Larry; granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Dr. Jennifer Loomis Huff and Michael, Dr. Diana Loomis Munger and Scott, Lauren Rotters Kolter and Rev. Jared Kolter; grandchildren, Emily Loomis and Michael Bergen; great grandchildren, Nicole and Colin Huff, Lilia and Grant Munger, and Della Kolter. The family will receive friends at Kyker Funeral Homes in Sweetwater on Thursday, May 8th, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service in the chapel with Dr. Frank Crawford officiating. Interment will be at Sweetwater Memorial Gardens on Friday, May 9th, at 3:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Sweetwater or to Sweetwater Area Ministries. www.kykerfuneralhomes.com
