ODOM, "CHIEF" CHARLEY TOM, ENC (SS) (Retired) - age 100, of Knoxville, passed away Friday morning, August 23, 2013, at Parkwest Medical Center. Charley was a resident of Ben Atchley State Veteran's Home. He was a member of Central Baptist Church, Bearden. He was born in Memphis and a veteran of World War II, Korean Conflict and the Submarine Cold War. Having risen to the rank of chief petty officer in his early years of service, he retired after twenty. After retirement he entered the University of Tennessee and graduated with honors. He began a teaching career at Fulton High School in refrigeration and air-conditioning and retired a second time in 1975. After his second retirement he enrolled in Pellissippi State and took ten semesters of Spanish. He used his Spanish on mission trips to Bolivia and Venezuela. He studied at the Bilingual Institute in Mexico. He was a substitute Spanish teacher at O'Conner Center and later began teaching a beginner class in Spanish. Charley was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Waller Odom, R.N., in 1990; and by his sisters, Linnie Odom, Martha Odom and Margaret Odom Dambrino. He is survived by nieces, Sarah Sanders Cox of Athens, Nancy Sanders Ford (Mike) of Macon, Georgia, Patricia Waller Best (Gary) of Marietta, Georgia, and Betty Waller Akin of Lenoir City; sister-in-law, Sara Gallaher Waller of Knoxville; great nieces, Beth Cox Parker (John) of Middlesboro, Kentucky, Lynn Cox Baker (Tupper), Jennifer Cox Pinkner (Greg) and Kristy Best all Knoxville, Kelly Best Clark (Dan) and Rachel Best both of Marietta, Georgia: great nephews, Chris Ford (Waynette) of Savanah, Georgia, Gerry Ford (Paula) of Macon, Georgia, and Chris Saylor (Sandy) of Lenoir City; seven great-great nephews and five great-great nieces; one great-great-great niece. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday followed by a celebration of life at 2:30 p.m. at the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel, with Rev. Mark Moreland officiating. Full military honors will be conferred by the US Navy and the East Tennessee Veteran's Honor Guard. Interment will follow in Macedonia Cemetery. John Parker, Tupper Baker, Greg Pinkner, Ben Cudzilo, Michael Ford, John Goin and Stan Hillard will serve as pall bearers. Caregivers at Ben Atchley Home and Friends and Tablemates at Ben Atchley will serve as honorary pall bearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Macedonia Cemetery, c/o Mary Ann Stewart, 335 Calloway Dr Lenoir City, TN 37772-5927.
