NELSON, GERALD H. - 76, of Kingston, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2014 with his loving wife, children, family, and friends by his side. Born and raised in Claxton, TN, he was a 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force. Tours of duty took him to Libya, the Asian Pacific, and numerous installations throughout the U.S. He helped pioneer large-scale computing systems, including developing the Air Force's central personnel management system, which was later adopted by the Army and Navy. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he served as the Director of Computing Services at Roane State Community College in Harriman from 1975 until his retirement from there in 1996. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with family. An avid outdoorsman, he liked to camp, hunt, boat, fish, four-wheel, and motorcycle, but golf was his greatest passion. He enjoyed a multitude of golfing friends at Lakeside Golf Course and across the region. He was preceded in death by his father William Nelson, mother Eva (Conner) Nelson, and sister Wanda Henderson; sisters-in-law Beulah (JB) Oaks, Helen (Bud) Payne, Bessie (Ed) Beckham, Grace (Sonny) Rice, and Jayne Rice; brothers-in-law Charley Julian, Reed Julian, Dewey Southers, Harve Dalton, and George Cook. He is survived by wife Sandra Nelson; son Tommy (Sherry) Nelson; daughter Cindy (Earl) Hartsell, all of Kingston; sister Pauline (Ralph) Franse of Claxton; brother Wayne Nelson of Maryville; grandchildren Aaron (Jessica) Wisener, Alli Nelson, Conner Nelson, and Trevor Hartsell; sisters-in-law Betty Cook, Rose Julian, and Harriet Southers; brothers-in-law Lester Rice, Curtis (Luci) Julian, and Frank Julian; many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.
