HURLEY, JOHN EMMETT -age 85, of Knoxville died Wednesday, December 18, 2013. John was a member of St John Neumann Catholic Church and former member of Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Upon graduation John joined the Army and was assigned to Brook Army Medical Center where he was trained in X-Ray and served as an instructor. He was a graduate of St. Louis University with a commission of 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force. John enjoyed a successful career as a Pharmaceutical Representative of Dow Chemical Company. In 1983 he was Co-Chairman of the Dogwood Arts Festival with Mrs. Sue Clancy. John also chaired the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities when Catholic Charities, under the influence of Mr. David Dotson, Mrs. Mary Leslie Dotson and Bishop Anthony O'Connell, made possible the foundation of the Interfaith Health Clinic. In his remaining years, John had the pleasure of working at the Love Kitchen and was most recently as an ETHRA volunteer Ombudsman assigned to the Ben Atchley Veterans Nursing Home and NHC Farragut. His parents were John Emmett Hurley and Clara Brock Hurley of Sedalia, Missouri. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Helme Hurley; daughter, Donna W. Hurley; sons and daughters-in-law, John E. Hurley III and Christine A. Hurley, James M. Hurley and Debra D. Hurley; grandchildren, John C. Hurley, Megan F. Hurley; sister and brother-in-law, Jane Carpenter and Ken Carpenter; brother and sister-in-law, Donald Wade Helme and Karen D. Helme; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 22, 2013 in the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel. A memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. John Newmann Catholic Church, 645 St. John Court, Farragut, TN 37934 with Father Doug Owens celebrant. Family and friends will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 23rd at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery for graveside services with full military honors to be conferred by the East Tennessee State Veterans Honor Guard.
