CAGLE, ROBERT HUNTER - age 81, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014. He was born December 10, 1932, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to the late Fred and Nell Cagle. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and Sunday school class teacher. He also served in the Presbytery of East Tennessee on several divisions and was a member of the General Council during 2002 - 2003. Mr. Cagle was a graduate of Knoxville High School in 1950 and attended the University of Tennessee until January, 1952, when he was called into the United States Navy during the Korean War. At the conclusion of the Korean War, he returned to UT and graduated with a B.S. in business administration. Hunter was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Hunter graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law with a doctor of jurisprudence degree in December 1957, and after briefly practicing law in Knoxville, he went to Nashville as the law clerk to the United States District Judge. In July of 1959, Hunter was appointed assistant U.S. attorney in Nashville and held that position until September 1961. At that time, he returned to Knoxville with the firm of Poore, Cox, Baker and McAuley, where he practiced for 26 years. In 1987, he joined the firm of Kennerly, Montgomery and Finley and retired from active practice in December 2004. Mr. Cagle was a member of many professional organizations, including the Knoxville and Tennessee Bar Association, the Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association (president, 1977), the Association of Civil Defense Attorneys (Board of Directors 1980 - 1983), founding member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (National Board of Directors 1987 - 1988), Defense Research Institute, Federation of Insurance and Corporate Council, and American Inns of Court. Hunter would have been married to Judith (Judy) Vance Cagle for 53 years on March 18, 2014. He leaves his wife; son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Bobby) Hunter Cagle, Jr. and Kim Deaton Cagle; daughter, Stacy Cagle Davis; grandchildren, Brendan Hunter Cagle, Cameron Parker Cagle and Robert (Robbie) Paul Davis. Interment will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, at Highland Memorial Cemetery. A celebration of life service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dr. William C. Pender and Reverend Dr. Paul P. Rader officiating with visitation following in fellowship hall.
