RAINS, VIRGINIA SUE (PATRICK) (STEWART) - age 78, of Clinton, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at University of Tennessee Medical Center surrounded by family. She was born June 21, 1934 in Greenville, Tennessee. She attended many schools growing up as her family moved with the building of several TVA dams. Music was always an important part of her life and she studied Classical Music Performance with Edward Zambara at the University of Tennessee. She sang in university, community and church choirs throughout her life. She was known for her love of learning. Her first degree was in Music Education at the University of Tennessee then a degree in Elementary Education at the University of Minnesota, and later adding a Master's degree in Education Psychology at the University of Tennessee. She was part of the Brickey Elementary School family for twenty five years, teaching fifth grade. Along with music, she enjoyed participation in many civic, social and church organizations. In all her activities, she made lifelong friendships. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Sue (Wilkerson) and Freeman Vaughn Patrick. She is survived by: husband, Jack R. Rains of Clinton; sister, Margaret Reese of Halls; step brother, Stephen and wife Clarendia Brown of Orville, OH; daughter, Suzanne Stewart and husband Fred Stenglein of Crossville; son, Donovan and wife Pam Stewart of Knoxville; step son, Brock and wife Terri Rains of Clinton; stepdaughter, Leora and husband Greg Wallace of Clinton; grandchildren, David and Christopher Rains, Chrissy and Dustin Ray Manning, Kelsey and Alyssa Stewart; great grandchild, Ava Rains. The family will receive friends 2:00 - 4:00 pm, Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Memorial United Methodist Church. Virginia's memorial service will follow with Rev. Laurence Hesser and Rev. Donald Swift officiating. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorials be made to the Music Department at Memorial United Methodist Church 323 N. Main St., Clinton, TN 37716.
