Helen Ellery Obituary

Passed on peacefully on June 21st. She was born on August 22, 1917, and moved with her family to the San Fernando Valley in the mid 1920's. After attending Van Nuys High School, she graduated from U.C.L.A. as a sociology major. Helen worked at Lockheed in the engineering dept. during the war effort. She then became a social worker for the Red Cross at the Naval Base at Mare Island in Vallejo, CA. Soon after meeting Dr. Robert Ellery, Optometrist in Van Nuys, they were married August 16, 1947 by the Naval Chaplin. They made their home for many years in Van Nuys, where they raised their children Elizabeth Ellery Fritz and Robert John Ellery, Jr., who along with their families survive Helen.

Helen and Robert were extremely involved in numerous organizations in the area. Helen was a long time member of the Assistance League, Hospital Auxiliary Guild, Chapter AN of P.E.O., and the Old Treasures Club.. She and her family were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Van Nuys, where Helen served as a Deacon and was a member of the choir. Her daughter and son-in-law were married in the church in 1971. Both Robert and Helen were committed to the development of the Mid Valley YMCA and the Van Nuys Rotary Club. Helen is also survived by grandsons Brian Fritz, Tim Ellery and granddaughter Emma Ellery; as well as great grandchildren, Ellie and Eastan Fritz. Helen's love of life touched many and her family takes comfort in knowing that she is in Heaven and at peace.
