Charles Michael Dollbaum Sr. Obituary
August 31, 1925 - June 10, 2014 Charlie passed away peacefully after a short illness on June 10 at 88 years of age. A resident of Huntington Beach, CA, for over 40 years, he is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Martha, and his 7 children, daughters Michele (John Snider) and Marlene (Charles Koch), and sons Charles, Jr. (Margaret), Tom (Kate), Christopher, Mark (Susie), and Richard. Ever devoted to, and proud of his large family, he also leaves 9 beloved grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, two sisters, one brother, and numerous nieces and nephews. Charlie was born in Wallington, New Jersey, the eldest of 8 children of Charles and Violet Dollbaum. He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY in 1946 with an engineering degree and served as a Merchant Mariner following World War II. Charlie loved the sea and sailed mostly on Liberty Ships for over 11 years. Following his sailing career, Charlie worked in and supervised various liquid chemical manufacturing plants for Linde Corporation, and took pride in being the manager of the liquid hydrogen plant that manufactured fuel for the first manned landing on the moon. He retired as a Plant Manager in Wilmington, CA. after 25 years of service. He was a long time and devout parishioner of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, Huntington Beach. In retirement, Charlie relished the opportunity to care for his grandchildren, spend time with his wife, sail his Catalina sailboat off the Southern California coastline, and complete a crossword puzzle every day. A private memorial service will be held. Donations in memory of Charlie may be directed to the U.S. Olympic Committee at teamUSA.org.
