She was born in Houston, Texas, on July 8, 1920, the eldest of two children to Jack Carberry of Denver, Colo., and Catherine Mealy Carberry of Wilmington, Del. Donna graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1938 and studied English at UCLA and also attended business school. During World War II, she worked as a production assistant for Movietone News and at Enterprise Studios. She was married in 1946 to Will E. Scheibe of Los Angeles until he died in 1991. In the early 1950s, she moved from Enterprise to Universal-International Studio where she worked in the publicity and script rewrite departments. Later, she became an executive secretary to director David Miller. In 1962, she was hired as a society reporter for the The Valley News and Green Sheet, where she worked until 1965. She then joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times as a general assignment reporter in the paper's suburban sections. She retired from The Times in 1980. Donna was a noted volunteer in the community and was actively involved with the Encino Women's Club, the Los Encinos State Historic Park, St. Cyril's Catholic Church and Encino Baseball. She also wrote an around-the-town column for the Encinian under the byline Mary O'Malley. She is survived by her four children--John, Cathy, Matt and Jim, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to Catholic Relief Services.
