August 13, 1936 - September 27, 2013 Dr. Ernest (Ernie) Salvatore Follico passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on September 27, 2013 with his beloved wife Gloria, constant companion of 55 years, at his side. Ernie was born at Good Samaritan Hospital, Hollywood, CA on August 13, 1936 to Italian parents Al and Pauline Follico, and resided in East Los Angeles. Ernie was joined later by his younger sister, Virginia. Life was all about family, Italian dinners and card games. Ernie showed an early athletic ability for tennis, becoming a junior L.A. City Champion and entered USC. He became captain of the USC Tennis Team and graduated in 1958. Upon graduation, Ernie and Gloria were married and began a life together in Chicago where Ernie attended Loyola University Dental School, graduating with advanced degrees in Orthodontics. During the Chicago years, his eldest daughter, Karen, was born. Then it was back to California where he served as an Orthodontist as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. Soon, he established his orthodontist practice alongside his lifelong friend, Jim Cecchini, a general dentist in Montebello. The family grew in the 60s with the addition of Tina and Anthony, and they also adopted a daughter, Lucy from Sicily. They spent many weekends together skiing at their home in Mammoth. Ernie retired at the age of 40, which left many years to excel at racquetball, eventually as a nationally ranked senior; real estate; vacations in Cabo San Lucas and Palms Springs with Gloria and family; and continue his lifelong pursuit of cooking pasta and being with family. Ernie could often be spotted driving his Stutz Blackhawk, or seen dressed from head to toe in green to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Newport Beach. Ernie is survived by Gloria; sister, Virginia; daughters Karen Littlefair, Tina Newman, Lucy Sansosti; and son, Anthony Follico, including 7 grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at Pacific View Cemetery, Newport Beach, CA on Saturday, October 12th at 10:00 a.m. followed by a celebration of life for family and friends at the Lido Isle Clubhouse, Newport Beach, CA at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions made in Ernie's name to the Hoag Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute at www.hoaghospitalfoundation.org/giving-opportunities.html
