Dr. James Yu-Ping Chen passed away peacefully on Oct. 4, 2012 in Fountain Valley, CA. Born in Tientsin, China, he was one of nine children of M.S. Chen and Grace Lin Chen. He graduated from Peking Union Medical College in 1941, specializing in pharmacology and internal medicine. In 1944 he married Marjory Liu and in the late 1940s they emigrated to the U.S. where their four children were born. Dr. Chen held teaching and research positions at UC, San Francisco School of Medicine, and at Tulane University School of Medicine before his term as Professor at Marquette University Medical School from 1950-60. He then became Director, Clinical Pharmacology at Riker Laboratories, and Head of Space Medicine Program at North American Aviation. He later maintained a 29-year private practice in Santa Monica, CA specializing in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. He treated thousands of patients, patented a medicine and was instrumental in integrating acupuncture into the U.S. Dr. Chen avidly practiced and promoted a healthy diet, loved to cook and even wrote a cookbook after retiring at 84. Throughout his active life he sought new endeavors and enjoyed world travels. He was predeceased by his second wife Jenny, and his seven brothers. He is survived by his children Doreen, Kenneth, Kathleen and Dennis, six grandchildren, and his sister Mary. He will be missed by the countless people whom he touched.
