August 20, 1933 - June 9, 2014 It's with a heavy heart that we share with you the passing of James Michael Barrett on Monday, June 9th. Jim was born in Sioux City, Iowa on August 20, 1933 to the parents of Leo and Mary Barrett. The family moved to Hollywood, California when Jim was age 6. Jim attended Blessed Sacrament School where he met his wife of over 49 years, Dorothy McCormick. After Blessed Sacrament School Jim attended Loyola High School. In his senior year, he transferred to Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, CA. Upon graduation in 1952, Jim signed a professional baseball contract with the St. Louis Browns. He played professionally for five years ending his career with the Kansas City Athletics organization. During this time in his life Jim was drafted into the Army and served two years in Korea as a medic. After his baseball career, Jim became a fireman with the LA City Fire Department where he enjoyed a wonderful 30 year career. In addition to being a firefighter Jim had a long career in real estate working for Ramsey Shilling Real Estate Brokerage. Jim became very active in the Toluca Lake business community and was elected President of the Chamber of Commerce for two different terms. His weekly articles in The Tolucan became a beacon for discussion and comment. Jim's true heart was always in his commitment to his family, friends and youth sports. Jim coached many years at Toluca Lake Little League, Toluca Senior League, American Legion Baseball and a number of summer teams. His fondest memories are of being in the dugout with his players - no matter where the games needed to be played. Over the years Jim became very active at St. Charles Borromeo Church and Delores Mission where he sponsored two scholarships for grade school students. Jim was predeceased by his wife Dorothy on March 20, 2004. However, when one door closes another opens and Jim was fortunate to reconnect with a longtime friend and fellow Blessed Sacrament School student, Margaret Mary Dubrovich Marshall. Jim and Margaret married on February 19, 2011 at St. Charles and were fortunate to spend over 4 wonderful years together. If not for the support and patience of Margaret we would have lost Jim several years ago. In addition to Margaret, Jim is survived by his four children (James Jr., John, Kellie and Denny), and their spouses, 12 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial mass will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Church located at 10850 Moorpark Street in North Hollywood at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 17. In addition to the memorial mass, there will be a burial ceremony at Forest Lawn in Hollywood Hills, and all are invited to a reception following at The Sportsman Lodge in Studio City beginning at 1 pm.
