Obituary Condolences

September 6, 1938 - May 15, 2013
James Thomas "Jay" Scott, M.D., died May 15, 2013, in Los Angeles, from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, at the age of 74. Jay is survived by his wife, Susan Kushner-Scott; sons Keir, Patrick, and Mark (Lisa) Scott; brother Don Scott, M.D.; sister Rama Brown; half-brothers Carl and Clyde Scott; and eight grandchildren. He was born September 6, 1938, in Portales, New Mexico, and lived there until he went to Northern New Mexico University on a basketball scholarship. College was interrupted by four years' service in the Air Force. Jay graduated UCLA Medical School with a residency in psychiatry. Jay had a private practice in psychiatry and psychoanalysis, and was an original member of the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, where he was a teacher, and training and supervising analyst. Jay's deep commitment to his work and his students made him a highly respected member of the analytic community. In recent years, Jay became profoundly interested in Buddhism, and brought its philosophic principles into all aspects of his life. Contributions in his memory may be made to Prajnaparamita Buddhist Center, 2809 Ocean Park Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90405.
