John Michael Long Obituary
December 11, 1939 - June 26, 2014 Teacher, Researcher, Author, Father, Friend & Humanitarian dies at 75. John ("Mike") was born in a small town in northwest of Pittsburgh and moved to East Los Angeles with his widowed mother and four siblings in the mid-1940s. He attended Garfield High and was a loyal alumni all of his life. From Garfield, he enlisted in the Army and served most of his tour of duty in Germany. He then enrolled at East Los Angeles College, where he was a stand-out student before transferring to UCLA where he would earn a Bachelors and Master's degree in Anthropology. Professionally, he spent nearly 40 years as a professor of Anthropology at East Los Angeles College, worked as a researcher and writer on numerous scholarly publications, as well as volunteering in community support programs. Mike valued his time with friends and family, attending jazz festivals, playing pool in the local watering holes, the Star Room, the Cottage and the American Legion for many years. He was an enthusiastic supporter of a number of charities including serving, for many years, on the board of the Institute for Maximum Human Potential. Mike is survived by his only child, Michelle, her son Carter and his love of two decades Kathy, as well as, ex-wife and dear friend, Carole, nephews, nieces, and other close family and friends.
