Mary Kilduff Abbott Obituary
1917 - 2014 Mary Kilduff Abbott, R.N. Age 96 Passed away on Saturday, August 23rd at her daughter's home in Sherman Oaks, CA . Born October13, 1917, the youngest of four children, to James and Ann (Murphy) Kilduff in the village of Sallyhernane, Knock, Co, Mayo, Ireland. Trained as a Registered Nurse at Southmeade Hospital, Bristol, England, she served as a Nursing Sister in Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service during WWII. Immigrating to the United States in 1955, her nursing career spanned many years and clinical specialties. She obtained her baccalaureate and masters degree in nursing at Jersey City University. At the time of her retirement she was an angiographic nurse and nursing instructor at the United States Public Health Service Hospital, Staten Island, New York. Her book 'Invasive Radiologic Diagnostic Procedures' was published in 1978. She was a passionate patient advocate and it was written to assist medical staff in preparing patients, psychologically and physically, for the then relatively new field of angiographic studies. Following retirement in Florida, she traveled frequently between coasts and to Ireland visiting family and friends and, when necessary, nursing them in times of illness. She volunteered at her local Hospice, was an avid reader and was as at home with an electric saw and drill as with a stethoscope or sewing machine. She loved nothing more than a long chat and a good cup of tea. She is predeceased by her son, Shaun, her sisters, Margaret Kramer and Anne Costelloe, her brother, Patrick Kilduff and her husband, Basil. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer and other close relatives and friends including her niece Mary McNulty and family, Corona Del Mar, CA; nephews James (Marilyn Townsend) Kramer and family, Willits, CA; Michael (Diane Blumenfeld) Kramer and family, Beverly Hills, CA; Bernice Blatt and family, Encino, CA; Carol Roberts and family, Minneapolis, MN; Kate Bulik and family, Marietta, GA; Eda and Jack Darcy and family, Staten Island, N.Y; Jane Coghlan, Palm Harbor, FL; and, Denis (Ann) Mackey, Kansas City, MO. In Ireland she is mourned by nephew Seamus (Tina) Kilduff and family; cousins Carmel (John) McDonnell and family; and, the Keenan/Carney families, Co. Mayo, Ireland. A woman of immense personal strength, grace and humor has died. We mourn but celebrate her life and legacy. For your life has lived in me, your laugh once lifted me, your word was gift to me.
