Berle, Milton
Sincere condolences to our dear friend Lorna and the entire family. L.A. will not be the same for us this summer. We will miss the many fun evenings spent with you. It is hard to imagine going to the Friars and not seeing you. Your stories and jokes were always the highlight of our summers. Jane and Larry David

May the God of comfort and tender mercies continue to comfort your family and friends, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."" Please accept my sincere condolences during this time of your loss.

For Milton...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Milton Berle was the first and only show our family watched when we got our first television.
He captured the air waves and everyone had their tv tuned to his shows.
He was crazy as can be, but he enjoyed every minute of it.
His shows were of what he left for us, in his memory.
He will be missed.

I had the opportunity to chat with Milton two times in New York City and saw him get inducted with Sid Caesar in the NBC Hall of Fame. I also watched him perform at Westbury. I have to say that a fan could not have asked more. Milton could not have been more cheerful and gracious when we spoke. I will always miss Milton, Jack Benny and Bob Hope.

Uncle Miltie,
That's how Dad and I remember you from TV back in the 1950's.
I still recall reading about your story as a kid from back in the Vaudeville days in New York. It was when your beloved Mom coerced you into starting your number by walking on stage with the wrong foot.
The purpose of course was for you to gain more attention from the audience, as embarrasing as it must have been for you.
And the ensueing mess worked in your favor in the long run.
How great it would have been to hear the story directly from you in person.
Anyway, Keep em laughing up there.
God Bless,
Joe Lopez

I JUST BEGAN STARTIME, THE FAMOUS CHILDRENS' STUDIO AROUND THE CORNER FROM WHAT NOW IS THE ED SULLIVAN THEATRE,WHEN I AND FOUR OTHER YOUNGSTERS WERE SELECTED TO APPEAR ON THE TUESDAY NIGHT TEXACO SHOW. IT WAS MAY 1954 AND DAVY CROCKETT WAS A BIG HIT. THE SINGER WHO MADE IT FAMOUS WAS RECIVING A GOLD RECORD ON THE PROGRAM AND THE CHILDREN WHO WERE SENT FROM STARTIME WORE DAVY CROCKETT OUTFITS AND SAT AROUND HIM AS HE SANG THE SONG. BILLED ON THE SHOW THAT EVENING WAS PREZ PRADO (CHERRY PINK AND APPLE BLOSSOM WHITE), THE HARMONICATS, ARNOLD STANG AND PETER LAWFORD. I CAN VIVIDLY REMEMBER MEETING UNCLE MILTIE DURING REHEARSAL. HE HAD A TOWEL AROUND HIS NECK AND A PREMIUM CIGAR TIGHTLY AFFIXED BETWEEN HIS TEETH AS HE PREPARED FOR THE LIVE PRODUCTION JUST A FEW HOURS AWAY. HE WAS AFFABLE AND FUNNY AND LEFT ME WITH A LASTING IMPRESSION OF RESPECT AND ADMIRATION FOR THE GREATEST ORIGINAL PIONEER IN TV HISTORY. HIS THEME SONG WAS "NEAR YOU" AND I'M PROUD TO SAY I WAS NEAR YOU UNCLE MILTIE WHEN I APPEARED ON YOUR SHOW IN 1954!

To "Uncle Miltie"--
A great man who had to courage to have Elvis on your show at a time when that was not "socially aceptable"..yet entertaining to us little kids who loved "Miltie" and the hound dog Elvis was singing to.
Now you are joined with great company in your buddy Bob Hope. May you enjoy cracking jokes together from heaven and making the world smile down here.
What a great fellow..Hope you are getting high ratings in heaven.
Best wishes!
