Myrna Sharon Raeder Obituary
February 4, 1947 - November 16, 2013 Myrna Raeder, 66, revered professor at Southwestern Law School, passionate advocate for women in both the criminal justice system and the legal profession, and beloved wife, mother, and friend, died November 16 at her home in Los Angeles after a courageous two-year battle with breast cancer. Myrna was a prolific legal author who focused on the role of gender in federal sentencing guidelines, evidentiary issues in domestic violence and child abuse cases, wrongful conviction, and the impact of incarceration on women offenders and their children. Myrna was the first woman to chair the American Bar Association (ABA) Criminal Justice Section and served as chair of both the Evidence Section and the Women in Legal Education Section of the Association of American Law Schools. Myrna's many contributions to the legal profession were recognized with a number of awards including ones from the ABA and the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles. Born in New York, Myrna came to California in 1976 to teach at the University of San Francisco School of Law and then spent several years as a litigator at the law firm O'Melveny & Myers before joining the faculty of Southwestern in 1979 where she continued to teach until just days before her death. In addition to her work, Myrna was passionate about travel, sharing many memorable trips with her husband of 38 years, Terry Kelly. She is survived by Terry and their two sons, Tom and Mike, who will remember their mom for her warmth, sound advice, strength of character, and good humor. A memorial service for Myrna will be held in January. The family has requested that donations be made in her memory to the Myrna Raeder Scholarship Endowment Fund. Please contact Debra Leathers, dleathers@swlaw.edu, for information regarding the fund. Condolences and memories of Myrna may be shared at tokelly007@gmail.com.
