Richard McClung Obituary
McClung, Richard E.
January 6, 1961 - April 4, 2013
Richard E. -Rick- McClung passed away on Thursday April 4, 2013 in Thousand Oaks, Ca. Rick was born on January 6, 1961 in Glendale, Ca. As a young boy, Rick and his family lived in Thousand Oaks, Ca. where he graduated from Thousand Oaks High School in 1979. Rick is survived by his wife of 23 years, Monique McClung, three beautiful children; son, Cole, and daughters, Madison and Brooke, all of Camarillo. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard C. McClung and mother, Jean E. McClung. Rick's family was his number one priority. He enjoyed surfing with his son, and attending his daughters dance recitals. Other family activities included boating and coaching baseball, football, and volleyball. He and his family were members of Ascension Lutheran Church where his children also attended school. He was a second father to his nephews and nieces, and touched many lives within his community and his fire family. He was the ultimate role model and everyone loved him. In 1978 Rick began his career in the fire service as a Cadet for Ventura County Fire Department. He worked as a Reserve firefighter before becoming a member the Departments Hand Crew. In 1982 he joined Santa Monica Fire Department as a firefighter. On August 2nd, 1985, Rick was appointed to the position of Firefighter for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, where he quickly rose through the ranks as Firefighter/Paramedic, Engineer and later promoted to Fire Captain in 1994. He was assigned to his final station in 2003, Fire Station 144 in Westlake Village. A young firefighter that was trained by Rick recently stated, Rick was known as the blueprint for his peers, not just on how to be a firefighter, but also as a man, husband, father and great human being. He was accessible to anyone that needed his help and his peers sought him out for insight on all aspects of the firefighting profession. Off duty with family and friends or at the fire station, people knew he was always available to help them whenever needed. His smile and comforting presence was uplifting. Rick was a consummate practical joker at the station, but when a call came in for help, he was the leader that everyone looked up to. His awareness of the situation and calm demeanor helped control any emergency. Rick was one of a kind, respected by all who were close to him and to those that were lucky enough to meet him.
A celebration of Rick's life was held April 15th at Calvary Community Church, Westlake Village, Ca.
