Sergio Zeballos Obituary

July 18, 1955 - June 30, 2013
Sergio Zeballos, 57, passed away peacefully on June 30th, 2013, Los Angeles. Loving husband to Cecilia Z Miguez, cherished son of Jacobo Zeballos and Zulma Camejo and stepson to Ruben Perez, beloved brother of Ruben Perez Jr, adored uncle of Diego and Natalia Perez, and loved friend of many. He was born on the 18th of July, 1955, in San Ramon, Uruguay, and moved to New York at the age of 14. He graduated in 1977 with a BA in Architecture from Princeton University, where in addition to being a stellar student, he was the Captain of the Soccer Team. Sergio also played soccer semi-professionally in New York and Los Angeles, before his passion for design won over and he stayed in Los Angeles to follow that calling (though his love of soccer did not dissipate). Sergio's passion for architecture and his constant desire for learning and improvement led him to pursue and receive two Master's Degrees, a Master of Architecture from the University of South California in 1980 and a Master in Architecture and Building Design from Columbia University in 1983. Sergio was also a member of the American Institute of Architects. He worked for more than thirty years as an architect, the last eight years at Jerde Partnership as a Partner and Design Principal in Venice, California, where his colleagues became a second family. Architecturally, Sergio leaves his award-winning designs around the world, including in Russia, Seoul, Dubai, Hong Kong and closer to home, throughout Los Angeles County. Sergio's creativity and human touch will be remembered by the many architectural students from Princeton and other universities that he continued to mentor, the students he taught at UCLA, USC, the Southern California Institute of Architecture and Woodbury University, as well as all those he worked with during his ten years of volunteering with the Santa Monica Architectural Review Board. Everyone who has met Sergio will remember his incredible strength, determination, never-ending optimism, infectious smile, and his always welcoming and generous self. He was a dedicated, loving and loyal partner, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
