Herbert E. Axup
Herbert E. "Herb" Axup passed away on January 31, 2013 at the age of 92. Born on July 21, 1920 in Cleveland, Ohio, Herb moved to California with his parents in the early 1920's, settling in Anaheim. He attended Anaheim Union High School and Fullerton Junior College and served as a yell leader at both schools. The mascot at Fullerton JC, Herbie Hornet, was named after Herb.
During WWII, Herb was employed at McDonnell Douglas prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps. After the war ended, Herb married Elaine Clark and they moved to Westwood where he attended UCLA on the GI Bill. Following graduation, Herb and Elaine settled in Lakewood and he attended Long Beach State University for his graduate degree. Herb's career in public education was with the Compton Unified School District, first as a teacher and then as an elementary school principal.
As a retiree, Herb participated in Neighborhood Watch and served for ten years as a Community Safety Commissioner for the City of Lakewood. He was very proud to be one of the last few originial owners on his block in Lakewood. Herb loved Big Band music and still enjoyed listening to Chuck Cecil's "The Swinging Years" on KJAZZ. He also enjoyed most sports and was an avid fan of the UCLA Bruins, as well as the L.A. Dodgers and Lakers.
Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine in 1996 and by his daughter, Joan in 2009. He is survived by his son, Donn (and Pamela); daughter, Jill (and Howard Griffiths), son-in-law Spencer Schatz, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Internment was private and the Herb's family will hold a private memorial at a later date. Project Shepherd is a local non-profit that Herb enjoyed supporting.
