Howard A. Day

Howard A. Day (68) passed away peacefully at home on December 19, 2012 after a long, courageous battle against lung cancer. He was the youngest of four children and was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. Howard is survived by his wife, Patrice; his sons, Christopher and Jonathan (son, Anthony, passed away in September 2012); his nephew, Ron Day (Kai); and extended family and in-laws. Howard was born in Utah but came to California as a child and lived and attended Long Beach schools. He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam war spending about a year in combat. He was always interested in photography and won awards for some of his landscape pictures. He volunteered in youth sports organizations while the children were growing up as a coach or referee. During the past 15 years or so, he was involved with showing dogs in either obedience or conformation. He participated and volunteered in dog clubs and organizations including fostering dogs. Animals tended to be drawn to his calm nature and, at home, he always had a dog or two on his lap, sometimes even a cat. A memorial service will be held at Luyben Family Mortuary on January 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with interment at All Souls Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Howard's name to be made to either of these organizations: "Havanese Rescue Inc" at http://havaneserescue.com/ , "Beat the Odds" cancer education and support group at http://www.beat-the-odds.org/donations/.
