Mary Elizabeth Light Obituary
Mary Elizabeth
(Betsey) Light

Mary Elizabeth (Betsey) Light passed away on March 10, 2013 from injuries after a fall. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 11, 1914 but lived in Southern California most of her life. She grew up in Glendale and earned a BA in History from UCLA. After her 2 children were grown, she worked as a social worker for the World Council of Churches for 7 years and was very involved with the First Congregational Church of Long Beach where her husband Shelby J. Light, who predeceased her was associate pastor until his retirement in 1992. She was passionate about supporting a long list of charities. She also loved attending light operas, plays and movies. Her love of all sports might be due to the fact that she was the only girl among three brothers. She is survived by her younger brother, John H. Dekker, of Hendersonville, North Carolina. She was predeceased by her brothers, Albert and David Dekker. She is also survived by her son, Richard A. Jewell and his wife, Anne of Kalispell, Montana and their children, Devin Sugden and Eric Jewell; her daughter-in-law, Lorraine Jewell of San Clemente and her children, Julie Liverance, Jan Jewell-Brown and John A. Jewell as well as the 5 stepchildren of Reverend Light. Her son, Charles David Jewell predeceased her.
