William E. Vandament

William E. Vandament, Ph.D., aged 81, President Emeritus of Northern Michigan University, died peacefully on April 20th, 2013 in Signal Hill California, succumbing to a rapidly spreading bone cancer. Bill was pre deceased by his parents, Alva and Ruth Vandament; his sister, Mary McIntire; and his brother, Richard Vandament. He is lovingly mourned by his wife of 61 years, Margery R. (Lampe) Vandament; his daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Verne Clair of Binghamton, NY; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Ronald Burke of Signal Hill, CA; his grandson, V. Austin William Clair of Binghamton, NY; his brother, James (Marsha) Vandament of Quincy, IL; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends around the world. Bill was born in Hannibal, MO on September 6, 1931. His family later moved across the Mississippi River to Quincy, IL where he graduated from high school and received his B.A. at Quincy College. He later received his M.A. from Southern Illinois University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. In Experimental Psychology from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in 1964. His academic and administrative career took him to SUNY Binghamton, Ohio State University, New York University, and to the California State University Administrative offices in Long Beach, CA where he was Academic Provost and Vice Chancellor for the state college system. He assumed the Presidency of Northern Michigan University at Marquette in the Upper Peninisula. After Bill's retirement in 1997, he and Marge traveled the world, and he continued his writing on the history of science, as well as participating in volunteer activities, particularly Meals on Wheels of Long Beach. Despite his successful and demanding career, he was always a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew him for his integrity, his wit, and his idealism. According to his wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable contributions be made to the William and Margery Vandament Endowment Fund of Northern Michigan University, 1401 Presque Isle Avenue, Marquette MI 49855.
