Nancy Bennetch Obituary
Nancy C. Bennetch HEGINS Nancy Catherine Bennetch, 89, passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at her home. She was born on Friday, January 25, 1924, in Richland, a daughter of the late William and Margaret (Bollinger) Steinbach. Nancy entered the Army Nurse Corps on May 15, 1945 after completing her nurse's training at the Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing. She was honorably discharged December 18, 1951. Nancy served in Japan during its occupation. While there, she served in the Osaka Army Hospital and traveled to various outposts to immunize the troops. After returning stateside, she served at the Valley Forge Army Hospital caring for German War prisoners and soldiers. Nancy attained the rank of Captain and received the WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with "Japan" clasp, and Korean Service Medal. After her separation, Nancy worked at the Lebanon Veterans Hospital from 1953 to 1957. She was married in 1957 and then became a full time housewife and homemaker. For over 50 years she was a dedicate dairy farmers wife. She was a former leader and served on various councils and committees for the Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council. She was a member of the Elco Womens Club and Society of Farm Women Group 9. She was also a member of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, Schaefferstown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marlin E Bennetch, an infant son, Andrew, and one brother, John W Steinbach. She is survived by one daughter, Margie Smeltz and her husband Gary of Hegins; one son, William Bennetch and his wife Donna of Millbach Springs; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 278, Schaefferstown PA 17088.
