Donald Ray Bailey

Donald Ray Bailey, 81, born June 04,  1932, passed away May 09, 2014 after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary (Girven), his parents John and Lucy, sisters Judy (Pete) Klont, and Jaire (Fred) Conley, and brothers Ken, Jake, Dick, and Dan. He is survived by sons Gordon (Angela) and Dennis, daughter Karen, brother Bill (Ponnie), sister Carol Boering,  brothers-in-law Howard Girven of NY and Fred Conley of Charlotte, four grandchildren Kris, Ginger Gray, Brenda Dugan, and Becca, many great grandchildren and loving nieces and nephews, grand godchild Cody,  and numerous special friends.

A lifelong Lansing resident, Don graduated from Lansing Central High School and worked for General Motors for 30 years before his retirement in 1979. He served nine years in the Army National Guard, with special points of pride including prequalifying for the Olympics as a marksman and driving the Governor in the first vehicle across the Mackinac Bridge upon its grand opening. An avid sports enthusiast, he was a former little league coach and bowler, and had a special passion in later years for all things related to car racing. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and music, and also had special skills in small engine repair, keeping countless cars and lawn mowers running smoothly all around town. Don appreciated humor and simplicity in life, and valued family, friends and neighbors, and helping others above all else. He is already sorely missed but his family takes comfort in knowing he is reunited with his beloved Mary.
