George Szypula East Lansing George Szypula died on July 20, 2013 at the age of 92. He was the husband of June Szypula, with whom he celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on June 18, 2013. Born June 24, 1921, in Pottstown, PA, he was the son of the late Martin and Martha Szypula. In addition to his wife, George is survived by his children, Cheryl Bailey and her husband, Larry of Round Rock, TX; George M. Szypula and wife Brenda of Lansing, MI; Carl Szypula and his wife, Marina of Winter Garden, FL; Sue Swensen and her husband, Jeff of Eldersburg, MD; and nine grandchildren, Eric Putnam, Laura Pate, Heather Bailey, Jodi Meddaugh, Catie Szypula, Rafael Szypula, Sierra Szypula, Samuel Szypula, and Dillon Swensen. George was a veteran of World War II. He was a longtime member of University Lutheran Church & their choir. George was a pioneer of gymnastics. While at Temple University, he won four national AAU tumbling titles, the NCAA tumbling title in 1942, and the Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League AA title in 1942 and 1943. George was the first coach of Michigan State University men's gymnastics program. Accomplishments during his 41 year tenure include 252 career victories, an NCAA Championship in 1958 and Big Ten title in 1968. He was named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1966 and the NCAA Mideast Region Coach of the Year in 1987. His leadership produced 18 individual NCAA and 48 individual conference champions. After retiring, he coached gymnastics at East Lansing High School for 16 years. His devotion to gymnastics earned him inductions into the U.S. Gymnastics Hall of Fame, Temple University Hall of Fame, East Lansing High School Hall of Fame, National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame, and Michigan State University Athletic Hall of Fame. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 3, 2013, at University Lutheran Church, 1020 S. Harrison Rd., East Lansing, with his pastor, Fred Fritz, officiating. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the choir at University Lutheran Church, 1020 S. Harrison Rd., East Lansing, MI 48823. The Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
